What to expect
To make an accurate diagnosis and achieve best management, you have been asked to
attend for lung function testing.
Arrival: Please arrive 10 minutes before your appointment
Duration: Approximately 1 hour
What to bring: REMEMBER to bring your reliever inhaler with you to the appointment e.g.,
Salbutamol (Ventolin). (Including reliever and preventer inhalers).
Before Your Appointment
To ensure accurate results, please follow these guidelines:

If you use a reliever inhaler (e.g. Salbutamol (Ventolin) or Terbutaline (Bricanyl)):
→ Do not use for 4 hours before your test -
If you use Ipratropium (Atrovent):
→ Do not use for 6 hours before your test -
If you use multiple inhalers:
→ Continue taking them as usual unless advised otherwise
Please also avoid:

Smoking for 24 hours (if possible)

Alcohol for 4 hours

Vigorous exercise for 30 minutes

Heavy meals for at least 2 hours

Tight or restrictive clothing
During your appointment:

You will be asked to blow into a spirometer (a breathing test device)

You’ll perform several breathing tests at both slow and fast speeds

Maximum effort is required to get accurate results

A healthcare professional will guide you through each step

What Happens During the Test?
When to Reschedule Your Appointment
Please contact us to rearrange your appointment if you have:

Had abdominal or eye surgery, a heart attack, or a stroke within the last 3 months

A chest infection requiring antibiotics or steroids

Had COVID-19 in the last 28 days (please wait at least 4–6 weeks after recovery)
-
Coughing up blood
-
A current ear infection
-
Uncontrolled angina
